Introduction to Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy

This edition is produced, following the same principles of translation taken into account for LA BIBLIA DE LAS AMERICAS, seeing the need to reach a great number of Hispanic readers, including the growing Hispanic population of the United States of America.

The Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy is also a faithful translation of the Sacred Scriptures as they were originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

This edition is presented as another contribution to the translation of the Sacred Scriptures in today's language, and contemporary words and phrases have been used to make the reading easier. The pronoun, 'ustedes', with its corresponding verbs, has been used in place of 'vosotros'. The formal pronoun 'usted' has been used in those instances when a person is addressing someone superior.

The use of capitalizing many names and words is to stress teh importance of those terms in the reading and in the study of the Sacred Scriptures. (See 'Mayusculas' in the Formato General.)

The original translation of LA BIBLIA DE LAS AMERICAS was done by twenty-two translators and consultants and took fifteen years to be completed. The names of the original translators of LBLA are available at The Lockman Foundation.

This work was the base for the Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy. The Lockman Foundation wishes to express its gratitude to all who contributed to this new work under the direction of Dr. Eduardo Hernandez A., Editor in Chief and General Editor.

This version has been made with the desire that the Message of the Word of God be presented in such a way that aids every reader to study and understand His Word, whether being well versed in the Gospel or just beginning to walk in the ways of the Lord.

Principles of Translation

The Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy, with amplifications and references, is a faithful translation from the Sacred Scriptures as were originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. It has been produced with the purpose of offering Spanish speaking people the richness and the power of the Word of God in a way that it becomes a true devotional treasure and a practical instrument for study.

This new version is a product of intense labor and dedication of a considerable number is a product of intense labor and dedication of a considerable number of scholars from different Christian denominations, representatives of various Latin American countries and the United States. It is published with the firm conviction that the Sacred Scriptures, as were written in the original languages, were inspired by God, and are His eternal Word, they speak with renewed power to each generation to give wisdom that leads to salvation in Christ, equipping the believer to enjoy of an happy and abundant life on earth, and creating in the believer in a living testimony of the truth for the eternal glory of God.

The Editorial Board has observed four basic principles. It has attempted to bind in everything possible to the original languages of the Sacred Scriptures and has observed the gramatical rules using a style that's agile and readable, securing to maintain its literary beauty. The Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy is offered in the certainty that those who seek the message and the knowledge of the Sacred Scriptures, will find here a faithful and clear translation of the truth revealed by God in His Word. No translation work will be personalized.

For the text of the Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy we have tried to use terms and grammar of a modern Spanish.

The passages that are written in poetic form in the text of the original languages have been written exactlysimilarly in poetic form in this version.

HEBREW TEXT. In the Old Testament translation the Hebrew Bible Stuttgartensia has been used in which it has been completely looked over for critical apparatus of the Biblia Hebraica from Kittel.

For the translation of the times of the Hebrew verbs, we have taken into cosideration the sequence of tense, the immediate context, the complete passage in conjunction and whether its written in prose or poetry, trying to always be faithful as much as possible to the originals.

THE NAME OF GOD. For the name of God there are many words in Hebrew: one of the most common is Elohim, translated Dios; another is Adonai translated Señor; but the name assigned to God as His special name or His proper name in Hebrew has these four letters "YHWH". This was not pronounced by the Hebrews due to the reverence that they had for the sacredness of this divine name, and would substitute it for one of the other names of God. The Greek version of the Old Testament, know as the Septuagint (LXX), or version of the Seventy, translates "YWHW" generally as Kurios (Señor). In the Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy we have used the name of "SENOR" (all in caps) to translate the tetragon YHWH. When this name occurs right next to the Hebrew name "Adonia" (Señor) then "YHWH" is translated "DIOS" (all in caps). Some versions translate this name as "Jehova" and others as "Yave" or "Yahveh."

GREEK TEXT. Much attention has been placed on the latest manuscripts discovered to determine the best text possible. In general the text from the 27th edition of the Novum Testamentum Graece from Nestle-Aland has been used.

As far as the voice, moods, and tenses from the Greek that don't have exact equivalencies in Spanish, the editors have followed the rules for contemporary Spanish grammar in translating the verbs. The emphasis and the chronological meaning of the tenses have been consistently respected with careful attention to the context.

The Fourfold Aim That Guides All of Our Translation Work

1. These publications shall be true to the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.
2. They shall be grammatically correct.
3. They shall be understandable.
4. They shall give the Lord Jesus Christ His proper place, the place which the Word gives Him; therefore, no work will ever be personalized.

Translators

Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy is baised on La Biblia de las Américas. The translation team was composed of college, university, and seminary language professors and pastors who represent various major evangelical denominations. They worked together in translation teams for a period of 15 years in order to complete this Bible. The translators were chosen for their skill and dedication and are from various locations throughout Latin America, Spain, and the United States of America to ensure that La Biblia de las Américas would communicate with Spanish-speaking people around the world.
